The Popularity of Y-series in Thailand and 3 Recommended of itsMay 3, 2020
If we turn back to around 20 years ago, gay or Y-movies are classified as specific content. The Y-movie has originated from the word “Yaoi” in Japanese which means the romantic love between a man and man (boy’s love). The visual of male homosexuals, including LGBTQ mostly found in independent films. There is almost no chance of appearing in mass media. Most of Y-content is categorized in girl community such as web boards, comic books, and animation, etc.
But nowadays, Societal attitudes toward homosexuality vary greatly across different cultures. Thus, you can see that many of them are upcoming to the social public moreover. There is a variety of its character in movie or film. Along with content y which is getting more and more popular as we can be seen in the rise of y-series on LINE TV.
The reason why y-series is obtaining popularity, I assumed that from the marketer’s point of view, they think it can be sold easily. The cost of production doesn’t need to be high. The story doesn’t have to be complicated, mostly focusing on the main actors. Therefore, there is a way for the marketers in making money because it has such a huge target group today who obsessed with boy’s love. Furthermore, a majority of y series comes from GMM TV, a subsidiary of GMM Grammy, a content provider producing series and variety shows that are hit and loved by everyone especially among teens and young people across the country. I noticed that GMM has great marketing and promoting in almost all of its series. They often use hashtag during a broadcast to stimulates people’s interest, not only followers but also expanding to new groups as well.
And today I will recommend three of y-series on social media to you to watching in your free time during a boring quarantine. All three of these are on “line tv.” It is available on iOS, Android, or via the web and includes a host of popular TV shows and music videos from Thailand, Korea and Japan. It is also content for its video service from a number of different content providers, most notably GMM Grammy and Thairath TV. In addition, you can download it for free on smartphone or your device, so it means that it’s very comfortable while you want to watch it anywhere.
2gether The Series(2020)
2gether the series (or in Thai named: Phro Rao Khu Kan), is a 2020 Thai romantic comedy-drama television series. The series, directed by Weerachit Thongjila and produced by GMMTV together with Housestories 8. 2gether the series is now on-air via GMM 25 and repeats on line tv. And it is most of my favorite for now.
Tine (casting by Win Methawin Opas-iamkajorn) a lively freshman year has a gay admirer in his university named Green. To get Green to leave him alone, his friends suggest him to make Sarawat (casting by Bright Vachirawit Chiva-aree), a popular and attractive guitarist and soccer player, being his fake boyfriend. After his first attempt fails, Tine joins the music club, where Sarawat is a member. Eventually, Sarawat agrees to Tine’s offer but comes to a point where he wonders when their fake relationship will end. The ambiguity of their relationship later leads to a conflict between Tine and Sarawat.
In addition, this series has good promoting and marketing. There was pay attention on using a hashtag on twitter to feedback in each episode, including conversations between actors and fans, causing the series’s hashtag #คั่นกู reached to rank 1st on twitter’s trend in almost every episode.
By the way, in my opinion, the series has some defects. The biggest point that I can see is some scenario look unreal. For example, it has scenes that Sarawat’s fan clubs in university scream and run after him which is not be happened in real life even if that person is a famous actor. But These are just a little drawback because the overall was so good for me. The main reason that I think the series so popular right now because of the chemistry between two of the main roles. It was so natural. Their character is like duplicates from the fiction. Moreover, I really Bright’s performance. He can play very naturally. In my view, he is a good actor.
TharnType The Series (2019)
Type (Gulf Kanawut Traipipattanapong) is a dark, tall and handsome freshman who came from the southern. He is an impatient, ranting and rather rude person. And he is homophobic because he was molested by a man as a child. His life turns upside down when the new year of college brings along a very interesting person in his life, a gay roommate, Tharn (Mew Suppasit Jongcheveevat). Tharn is a very handsome music major with fair skin and mixed features, half Thai-American. He is also openly gay. A gay guy and with a guy who hates gay men that have to share a small space together for the rest of the year. In this series, the story will show how the rival turns to become the lover eventually.
I am a fan of its fiction before and what I like in TharnType The Series is that casting is chosen rather like the character in the fiction. The chemistry between the main actors is good. But there are also have drawbacks dissatisfy which watching it. For example, It’s too much of love scene. Also, I think the character of Type is too a bit aggressive. But overall of the movie is quite good, good screenplay, concise, reasonable and interesting.
Theory of Love (2019)
Third (Gun Atthaphan Phunsawat) is a filmology major student and a member of the savage team along with his best friends Two, Bone, and Khai, but he has a secret. Third has been secretly in love with Khai (Off Jumpol Adulkittiporn) for years. For three years he has kept his secret love in his heart, silently supporting and loving Khai while knowing there is absolutely no future between them since Khai is straight and also an absolute playboy. To make matters worse, Khai has a “no dating friends” policy. Third has to love Khai silently while watching Khai bring a different girl home every night. Third has tried to see Khai as just a friend. But has failed every time again and again. Because as easy as it is to fall in love, to stop is just as hard. Maybe even harder. That is until Third learns a secret that breaks his heart completely. But when Third decides to stop, Khai decides to start.
In my perspective, I quite like the scenario of its series. Maybe because of the main character studies in the field of communication arts which is due to mine. I gained a lot of new knowledge about film, camera, photo in its. The script is quite good also the main actors like “gun” so impressed me. This story has quite a lot of drama but he can communicate the emotion very well. He can make me really believed that secretly love with a close friend like off is how uncomfortable and painful.
That’s all of my favorite Y-series. And what’s about you? If you are Y-girls like me, then let’s shared some of your fav series down below in the comments!☺️💘
