For as long as we can remember, people have always valued beauty and outer perfection. We live in a society and as such, we also conform to the standards that come with it, one of them being beauty standards. Since outwards appearances are the first things people see about someone, what you look like and how beautiful you are will be the first impression on the person you’re talking to. Because of this, what you look like can also be considered a statement. This is where beauty products and skin care come in, what you choose to use and how you choose to maintain your skin is often a statement even if it is one as simple as showing that you’re a responsible and organized person because you took the time to take care of your skin. The GPD of the skin care and cosmetics industry is therefore, really high and you can buy the products anywhere almost as though they’re necessary for survival. With so many competitors in the market, there’s all sorts of products around us, some are good and do what they promise while others, not so much. While skin care did come a long way, especially considering lead and mercury were ingredients they used a lot during the Victorian era, today’s cosmetics industry are still sketchy when it comes to the ingredients and their qualities.

The brand Laneige is well renowned for their skin care and makeup products. It’s a counter brand which makes it quite expensive. The brand is very successful thanks to their heavy marketing, people think that this brand is good and legitimate. However, even a big name in the skincare industry such as Laneige is having people squinting their eyes at them with doubt at many of their products. One of the questionable ones is the Cica sleeping mask. Despite this mask being advertised as having Cica as the main ingredient, the truth is that the main ingredient is Forest yeast, as claimed by the brand. They say that this forest yeast was grown by their labs and has better effects than Cica by about 111.9%. This claim was made by their own lab and remains unverified and unproved, however, the brand’s marketing side is so strong that this brand still sells really well despite the false advertising. On the other hand, the brand Some By Mi, which is a smaller less known brand, has a cream called « AHA-ABA-PHA 30 days miracle cream ». According to the ingredient list on this cream, 70% of it is composed of Cica. This is huge as people used to pay way more for a product that had even 1% of the ingredient inside of it. Despite this, the product is only sold in beauty stores such as Sephora or other equivalents while the Laneige one is way more widespread and well known despite not even being as good and having sketchy ingredients with claims that remain unproved. This shows that just because a brand is popular, doesn’t mean it is any better than smaller brands. The most important thing is to do research and learn about the different ingredients. This can be rather tedious, however, which is why the skin care industry leaders are still thriving today.

This brand’s sunscreen is a known controversy in the skincare world. The brand claimed that the sunscreen was 84 SPF, therefore people flocked onto it, it sounded as though the sunscreen was truly high quality and really protected the skin well. However, this time, yet again, the quality of the product wasn’t as good as the brand claimed it was. People who used the sunscreen were confused as to how it could be 84SPF when it only had two layers that would at most protect from around 10 SPF. There were doubts and suspicions but they couldn’t prove anything themselves so they sent the sunscreen to different labs to get it tested to see whether or not the sunscreen were even 50+++ SPF. The results came back and were released to the public, both labs that were analyzing the sunscreen, using different methods, had around the same result which was that the sunscreen was around 19 SPF. Of course, after this shocking revelation, the brand couldn’t just sit still and made a statement saying that they were shocked and that they would immediately investigate the matter. What came out of the investigation was that the manufacturer was not following the ingredients list and instructions as given by the brand. On top of that, there were several hygiene issues during the manufacturing process. This example of false advertisement shows how we really should do our research properly first as brands themselves tend to keep things hidden away, especially the details about the manufacturing process. This of course doesn’t only apply to the skin care industry but to other sectors as well. However, it is of extreme importance here as hygiene is one of the most prioritized values in skin care.

Skin care tips?

With how questionable the skin care industry, what can we do as consumers to make sure our skin is well taken care of? The best answer would be to do a lot of research and learn about the different ingredients in skin care as well as navigate through the fake news that plague the industry. Just because something is a trend doesn’t mean that it is the best for your skin. For example, the Korean 10 step skin care routine is not actually necessary at all. Only 3 of the steps are sufficient, which are cleansing, moisturizing and sunscreen. Apart from these 3 steps, the rest is not at all necessary for daily use at all. However, it benefits the skin care industry when people think that the more the better as they can sell more products no matter how unnecessary because thanks to social media making it a trend, the 10 step skin care routine looks and sounds legitimate. Meanwhile, while only three of the ten steps are enough, it is still important to do your research and find the products that go well with your skin type and your needs. Since our skin is already somewhat self sufficient, a gentle cleanser is enough. A moisturizer is needed to balance our skin as the skin will produce more oil if it is dry. Finally, Sunscreen is important for protection, both what is called PA are needed in your sunscreen which will protect you from sunlight and blue light. Of course this is only a simple rundown and not a deep analysis of different ingredients so further research is important.

In order to conclude, the skin care industry is sketchy and mostly money driven. Of course, the quality of skin care products have come a long way since ancient times and we are now more aware of what is beneficial and what isn’t. The media’s role in this is both good and bad. While social media is a public forum good for exposing malevolent brands, it is also a place where globalized trends are influential on people’s lifestyles and skin care trends aren’t necessarily always good. When buying skin care, it is important to remember to check ingredients as well as the history and legitimacy of the brand. It sounds like a lot, and it is. Because it’s such a hassle, not many consumers bother getting knowledgeable about these things. However, if you want to properly care for your skin, it’s a must.
