Studying abroad is another dream that many students would like to study and get some experience once a time. Hence, this blog will talk about the differences in high school between Australia and Thailand by using own experience. I have been studied abroad in Australia for 2 and a half years. However, I think it would be useful for many people who are interested in studying abroad.

Differences in secondary education between Thailand and Australia.

  • Study Hours

Thailand: 7-8 hours per day

Australia: Less than 6 hours per day

  • Elective Subject

In Thai high school, there will be a schedule provided by the teacher. Students have to choose a program to learn in the next 3 years, which including sciences program, art-math, language arts, and fine arts society.

Australian children will begin to choose their own subjects from grades 10-12. In each grade, they can choose a different subject and will choose as a subject, not a program. However, students have to study basic subjects such as English, mathematics, basic sciences (only in grade 10).

Moreover, Australia has more subjects to choose more than Thailand (refer to figure below). I remember that Thai high schools will select specific subjects in each program and arrange the timetable for it. We cannot choose by ourselves. In Australia, there are a lot of subjects to choose from. To illustrate, for example, Australia is divided into 2 terms, 4 semesters. Which each term, students have to enroll 5-6 subjects, you may choose to study Chemistry in conjunction with Photography, English Literary, Media studies, and Business and Enterprise. It can be learned at the same time in one term. Which in Thailand we can’t choose to mix like this at all. In addition, there is also a special workshop such as if you choose woodwork subjects. You will learn how to make a chair, table, or small wooden box while you study and do it successfully. Then you can take that item home straight away. It is something that can help build great pride.

  • Learning Management System

The way of learning in Thai high school, we tend to recitation and listening to the lecture then apply the knowledge to the exam. However, if studying abroad there is a focus on analytical thinking, information criticism emphasizes the practice to do more than memorization.

Through my own experience, which has to study chemistry in year10. There focus on the real experiment. At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher will teach content by the following curriculum. After that, another half hour before the end of the lesson will be the experiment period of what the lecturer described earlier.

Moreover, education in Australia also has modern educational technology and offers a variety of learning resources to respond to learners in all aspects. However, Thailand attaches more importance to education than other countries. There are have many tutorial schools around convenient locations more than foreign.

  • Fundamental Rights and Freedoms

The teaching style and learning of Thai high school, having said that the word ‘force’ is very limited to students. Which is different from studying in a foreign country that is less enforced. They are forced only what is really needed. Everyone has the right to choose to do or not do activities assigned to them. The right and freedom in Thai high school is the main issue that many Thai students want to change dramatically.

  • Punctuality

Thailand: The punctuality of Thai teachers must say that it depends on the people. But most of the teachers come late and end the class late as well.

Australia: Teachers in Australia are always on time because Australian people put a lot of emphasis on punctuality.

  • Classroom Size

The obvious difference between Thai high school and foreign high school is the size of the classrooms. Thai high schools contain 40-50 people per room. In contrast, Australian high school determining clearly how many people will be. At most not more than 25 people, which the different numbers will affect the quality of the students and thoroughly care as well. However, it should be understood that Thailand also has a limitation on the budget of the classroom.

  • Assignment Task

Most Thai students complain that there is a lot of homework. Personally, Thai homework is not a lot. It will be a little task and an absurd job. Most of the project is done in a group, which less of the individual project.

The assignment task in Australia high school is much better than Thailand. Mostly, it is an individual assignment. It has to find a lot of information and analytical thinking. Then writing in a report by using your own understanding (refer to figure below).

The high schools in Australia do not focus on exams. But will focus on the research project and assignment task instead of the exam. I remember that there will be an exam only once a year. In my own experience, I had taking design subjects. This course requires to do a Portfolio in A3 papers instead of the exam. Limited to 40 pages. There are examples below to show how it made the folio.

However, Thai and foreign studies are differences, which arise from the context of different social environments. Changing education in Thailand is necessary to meet the world in the next era. But it must be based on gradual change to be more sustainable. Studying in a foreign country opens many perspectives. Absolutely, we can get multicultural by learning foreign culture. Our thoughts may change a bit and will be more receptive. Nevertheless, who are interest in study in abroad need to courage. Because you have to meet new people, new places, and still have to rely on yourself in almost every matter. Even if studying abroad creates freedom for you. At the same time, you must be able to handle small and large things that happen by yourself. Lastly, I can say that it was a very good experience in a lifetime.
