Case studies :
1. Recently, the group of Chulalongkorn university’ senior students had published their thesis on various social media platforms. The thesis is a social experiment aiming at Twitter users. Contents in the thesis are three women answering the question about beauty and consulting. One of them shows her bad perspective toward the audiences and that has effects on both audiences and the social. To elaborate, she claimed that in her and her friends’ opinions men still cannot wear skirts or whatever they want without being stared in public. And she also said about the beauty standards that she thinks it is not a fault to tell everyone whether they ugly or not because we live in a democratic society. This is the reason why society gives many negative feedbacks to this thesis.
2. In 2019, there was a tragedy happened with bisexual high school student by his schoolmate revealing his private chat with other boy classmates which associate with sexual topic on online sites. After that, he was bullied by his classmates not only online but also offline and then the situation got worse. In light of lastly post on his instagram, he said “ I really hate how I can trust anyone because those i did were so fake” , a few moments later he decided to kill himself. Ultimately, his parents attempt to call for justice to him and they also wish that this would be the last case which is one of outing/doxing in types of cyberbullying.
3. Another case study of outing and harassment is that a 14 years old girl named Sara had sent some pornography to his boyfriend on Snapchat. After he received the message, he also shared the pictures with his friends and then ridiculed her. Next, she got the harassing message asking for naked pictures via Snapchat. For this reason, it made her feel depressed and needed to talk to her counsellor. Luckily, there is no chat and photos recorded after it has been seen, thus the pictures no longer share. However, it still made a painful scar in Sara’s heart.
How to stop cyberbullying
1. Since the cyberbullying often occurs in between the puberties and young adults, in this range of age, these people are not aware of consciousness and still lack of maturity. Therefore, the related organisations should educate and raise awareness for users of social media platforms in order to decrease cyberbullying.
2. The culprits mostly claim that the action like this is freedom of speech but it is actually spreading hate speech. In consequence, society should realize the contradiction between freedom of speech and hate speech before posting on cyberspace.
3. Online users should have empathy for each other. And also we must think twice before sharing or saying the words which can pose hurtful stories to someone we communicate with. Everyone can be both the culprit and the victim, so put yourself in someone else’s shoes knowing they also have feelings like you!
