The Ethnic Media Project

The Ethnic Media Project was launched by the Center on Media and Society at UMass Boston with a conference and brainstorming session on April 7, 2004 involving journalists, media leaders, activists, political officials, academics, and students. The project subsequently received a planning grant from the Boston Foundation, which was used to create a free online directory of ethnic media organizations in Greater Boston. This project has been inspired and assisted by the New California Media organization in California, which pioneered ethnic media support nationally.

The Project has a core group of ethnic media organizations who are shaping its programs and direction. They are working on newsmaker press conferences, story exchanges, an on-line story digest, and “best practice” workshops. Our goal is to cut across ethnic boundaries, and find partners in the mainstream media and community at large. Participants include media from the Haitian, Russian, Latino, Irish, Indian, Chinese, African, African-American, and other ethnic cultures in Greater Boston. If you wish to join the project as a supporter, friend or participating ethnic media organization, please register. All aspects of the project are done on a pro bono, nonprofit basis and participation is free of charge. Donations are welcome!

On March 24, 2004, the Ethnic Media Project held its conference on The Future of the Ethnic News Business.
