Media and communication

The rise of social media has been spurred by the human need to communicate and digital technology improvements. It’s a narrative about making and maintaining strong relationships on a large scale. Nowadays, it is infrequent to find a person who needs an electronic device, for example, a mobile phone, a tablet, or a computer. That means most people have their sources of information in their hands, and they can use them whatever and whenever they want. In the media industry, many streaming platforms change with every era because the world changes constantly, and we are still determining what will happen. For example, in the past, people wrote letters, but now they can use a streaming platform to text each other. In the past, people listened to music or news on the radio, but now people can listen to music or read news on their own electronic devices.

Communication evolution

Communication and social structure evolve. It evolved from physical contact to broadcast communication to new media. Furthermore, communication grows and impacts the structuring of society and media literacy. Communication and social structure began with physical-space touch. In the past, it was hard to send news and information because of the distances, so they used “town criers” to deliver it. The messengers had to carry the message to its destination. After that, they developed by starting to have printing presses, which could print on paper or books. Following that, communication shifts to the broadcast era. It begins with having television and radio that share both entertainment and news.

In this day and age, the primary forms of communication that can reach a large number of people are television and newspapers. For instance, in Thailand, the Channel 3 morning show shares news daily. Today’s communication has evolved into a new media era. “New media” is any media that is delivered digitally. For example, mobile phones, streaming platforms, websites, email, and anything on the internet, the new media constantly changes because technology develops every time. The development of communication affects the societal structure and media literacy in both positive and negative ways. It is much easier to communicate with each other than before because we have many means of communication. For example, if you want to promote your brand, you don’t need to find a newspaper or television to enable it. You can post it on your streaming platforms from your device.

On the other hand, we should be aware of media literacy because it is straightforward for anyone to get on social media. It might have fake news and inappropriate stuff anywhere. For example, children may consume violent material and then imitate it outside. That might cause more in the future.

Social media affects students and jobs.

Students can use social media to interact with professionals in their fields of interest. Web pages like Twitter and Facebook enable students to network with people who can assist them in obtaining internships or jobs in the future. Social networking is a discussion platform, and what students publish may influence their identity. Before employing a worker, companies may look at their social media presence. Inappropriate or inflammatory content may jeopardize a student’s career chances. Social media leaves a digital imprint that kids may follow for years. Students must be cautious about what they publish and how they engage on social networks since this might impact their future career chances. The COVID-19 pandemic affects society and the economy, especially for students and people of working age. Due to the COVID-19 situation, most schools and offices are closed because of the lockdown. People and kids couldn’t go to school, which caused a big problem, so people turned back to using video chat and calls app—for instance, Microsoft Teams, Zoom Meetings & Chat, or Google Meet. People could use these streaming platforms rather than go to school.

Advantages of working and studying online

Kids and workers could use social media to find any information they need to know or want to study more about. Most kids want to learn at home because they have more flexibility by taking classes online. Because of its convenience, many individuals choose online learning. Virtual learning allows them to study education without going to an entire campus. While some online courses require students to attend live lectures, they can create their schedules and work at their speed. It is easier to manage time to do stuff because time management is a critical ability in many aspects of life. Everyone should balance family and personal duties with career responsibilities and everything else life throws at them. This necessitates planning ahead of time, and understanding how to manage their time is a skill that will benefit them. Another advantage of online learning is that they can obtain technological abilities to help them both in and out of the classroom. They could learn to use several gadgets and software (such as Google Meet, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams). They would also become experts at exploring digital educational content and using their course system for learning management. Knowing how to use various types of technology is especially important amid the COVID-19 epidemic. Same as the workers: they prefer working at home because they can improve the quality of their work by responding to emails from coworkers, attending a few meetings, and answering phone calls at their own house.

On the other hand, working from home allows them to focus better on their task and produce fresh ideas in a different setting. It provides an excellent chance for former office workers to better their careers while having more time for creativity. Working from home also gives them extra time to enrich their lives because they don’t have to worry about getting up early. This allows them to spend more time with family before or after work—at least 1-2 hours daily. They can utilize their free time to exercise, read, meditate, or clean. Families will have more time to cook healthier foods for their children, help them with homework, and care for their parents. Some people can raise organic vegetables that are both healthy and cost-effective. With just a few additional hours daily, they can achieve much more with their lives than previously. They could de-stress with a slow life. Apart from working hard, city office workers are always in a hurry, rising early, leaving home early to escape traffic congestion, and returning home late at night. Because they don’t have time to make breakfast, most don’t even have time to consume it at home. They must instead rely on convenience stores or street food. Coming home in the evening might be stressful, and it may be late before they complete their nighttime ritual and retire to bed. These difficulties can cause physical and mental exhaustion, stress, chronic sickness, heartburn, or sleeplessness. Working from home allows office workers to restart their life cycles. They are not required to participate.

Moreover, students and workers would be safe from COVID and PM2.5 because when they leave the house during this pandemic, they should wear a mask and have hand gel. Working from home reduces the hazards of being caught in stuffy public transit with other people breathing down your neck, allowing you to escape the perils of COVID-19 and PM2.5. It can also help lower PM 2.5 levels by reducing pollution exposure while stuck in traffic.

The disadvantage of working and studying online

On the other hand, working and studying online also have some disadvantages. For example, they need more motivation to achieve their objectives. It is easy to lose motivation when placed in the right location at a good moment. It also puts the targeted business consequences at risk. Working in an office with coworkers who share a common objective and purpose or getting a pep talk from a boss may be tremendous sources of external inspiration.

On the other hand, working from home lacks that type of setting. Motivation may make life challenging for an employee and harm their productivity. While self-motivation might be effective, more is needed to keep a man going. Working alone may also be challenging. In this capacity, employees must keep track of their job performance. Self-regulation is a difficult task, and employees’ judgment is required. Workers may frequently slack off and take numerous breaks, resulting in longer and less productive work times when breaks and work are not monitored.

In contrast, at work, one is continually reminded to stay on track and perform efficiently and successfully, which is intricate with remote work. Online learning may create a sense of isolation because everyone learns uniquely and by themselves. Some students may work independently, while others feel comfortable in their school environment, with easy access to lecturers or fellow students. Online virtual classroom platforms have been attempting to bridge such gaps by building a sense of community in the virtual environment by developing technologies that enable learners to participate actively in live sessions. Online education must promote the social side of learning.
